The Northern Circuit is the longest and most rewarding trail on Mount Kilimanjaro, taking 9 days to complete. It begins along the scenic Lemosho route on the mountain’s western side, leading you to the dramatic Shira Plateau before turning north to circle the summit in a rare clockwise loop.
From here, the route connects with Rongai to approach the summit from the quieter eastern slopes, before descending on the southern Mweka trail.
As the newest and arguably finest route on Kilimanjaro, the Northern Circuit combines the very best features of the other trails—spectacular scenery, a true sense of wilderness, fewer crowds, and a higher chance of spotting wildlife along the way.
For the first few days it mirrors the Lemosho route, but instead of heading south around Kibo, it veers onto the little-used northern paths. This section is remarkably peaceful, with serene campsites that offer solitude and a deeper connection to the mountain.

From your lodge, we’ll drive a few hours to the Londorosi Gate on the western side of Mount Kilimanjaro. Here, our trek begins at the Lemosho trailhead. During the rainy season, the road can become muddy, and vehicles may not always reach the official trailhead—but thanks to our skilled drivers and sturdy vehicles, we usually get farther than most.
After enjoying a picnic lunch, we set off on a 4–5 hour hike through the lush rainforest. The trail winds beneath towering trees draped in moss, with vibrant flowers adding splashes of color along the way. Birdsong fills the air, and if we’re lucky, we may spot black-and-white colobus monkeys or notice the subtle signs of elephants that roam this area.
We’ll spend the night at Forest Camp, nestled at an altitude of about 9,498 feet.
